History and folklore
Dagaz means day. The Old English rune poem calls day the Lord's messenger, dear to all, a light of hope and joy for rich and poor alike. It has no place in the Norse rune poems. Our sense of Dagaz comes from this medieval poem, written in a Christian era, and from modern interpretation. Readers see it as dawn, clarity, awakening and breakthrough, the moment when long effort finally turns into understanding.
