Safety: Generally gentle to handle. If swallowed it can slow how the body absorbs medicines, so anyone on medication, pregnant or breastfeeding should not take it as a remedy without asking a doctor. Keep dried herbs where pets cannot eat them.

How to use it

  • Ancestor offering

At Samhain, set a small dish of dried marshmallow root on your ancestor altar beside a white candle and a photo. Speak a few words of welcome and remembrance to those who came before you.

  • Psychic pouch

Mix marshmallow root with a pinch of mugwort in a small blue pouch and keep it near your tarot cards or under your pillow when you want your intuition to feel soft and open.

  • Gentle protection jar

Place marshmallow root, salt and a moonstone in a small jar and set it by your bed. Let it stand for a cushion of calm that keeps harsh energy at a distance.

History and folklore

The mallow family has been part of human life since ancient times; Roman and Egyptian cooks ate the leaves, and Greek writers praised the plant for soothing. The original marshmallow sweet was made from the gooey root before gelatin replaced it. In folk magick the plant was linked to spirits: it was set on altars to draw kindly spirits near, and planted on graves as a gesture of care. Its soft, moist nature ties it to the Moon and to Water.
