Safety: Do not swallow cowslip, and avoid it if you are pregnant or sensitive to plants in the primrose family. Wild cowslips are protected in some places, so grow your own or buy dried flowers instead of picking them.

How to use it

  • Beltane fairy offering

Leave a few cowslip flowers in a small dish in your garden on Beltane eve as a gift for the fair folk, with a quiet thank you for the blessings of spring.

  • Finding what's lost

Hold a dried cowslip flower and picture what you are looking for. Ask the "key flower" to unlock its hiding place, then put it in your pocket while you search.

  • Youthful spirit bath

Float a handful of fresh cowslip flowers in a warm bath to feel light and renewed. Let it wash away tiredness and bring back a sense of spring.

History and folklore

Cowslips are yellow spring flowers of English meadows. Their hanging blooms look like a bunch of keys, which gave them the folk names "keys of heaven" and "key flower": legend says Saint Peter dropped his keys and cowslips grew where they fell. Folklore links them to fairies, hidden treasure and Beltane, and they were once used in cosmetics to keep skin looking young.
