History and folklore

When tomatoes reached Europe from the Americas, many people feared them because they belong to the nightshade family. The French and English called them "love apples" and believed they stirred passion. In folk magick a large red tomato on the mantelpiece was said to bring prosperity to the home, and one on a windowsill or doorstep to keep evil away.
