The best love spells don't try to make anyone love you. They open your heart, help you love yourself and invite the right kind of love into your life.
Love is one of the oldest reasons people have turned to magick, and it's no surprise that "love spells" is one of the most searched topics in witchcraft. But a lot of what you'll find online promises to make a specific person fall for you. That's not something we teach, and below we'll explain why.
In this guide, you'll find five simple, ethical spells for love: a self-love spell, a rose quartz spell to attract love, a honey jar to sweeten a relationship you're already in, a friendship spell and a simple candle spell. We'll also cover the best timing, a table of love correspondences and how to work with love magick safely.
How to Cast a Love Spell the Ethical Way: 5 Steps
- Focus on yourself or a quality, not on a specific person. Ask for the kind of love you want, not for a name.
- Pick your timing: a Friday, a waxing moon or a full moon are traditional favorites.
- Gather simple tools: a pink or red candle, rose petals, rose quartz, honey or sugar.
- Cast the spell with a clear heart and speak your intention aloud.
- Take action afterward. Say yes to invitations, show up as yourself and give the magick room to work.
Why We Never Cast Love Spells on a Specific Person
This is the most important part of love magick, so let's start here. A spell that tries to make a particular person love you, come back to you or stop seeing someone else is a spell that tries to override their free will. Most Wiccans and many other witches won't do it, for a few reasons:
- It breaks the Rede. The Wiccan Rede says "An it harm none, do what ye will." Taking away someone's choice is a kind of harm, even when it's done out of love.
- It isn't real love. Love that's pushed or pulled out of someone can't be trusted, and deep down you'd always know it.
- It keeps you stuck. Fixing your heart on one person can stop you from noticing someone who would truly be right for you.
- It tends to go wrong. Many witches believe that energy you send out comes back to you. Spells that bend another person's will are known for messy, unhappy results.
So what if there's someone you really like? You can still do magick for yourself: for confidence, for clear communication, for the courage to ask them out. Then let them choose. That's healthier, kinder and far more powerful.
One more thing. If you're in a relationship that feels unsafe or controlling, no spell is a substitute for real support. Please reach out to someone you trust or a local helpline.
Best Time for Love Spells

You can cast a love spell any time your heart is in it, but traditional timing adds a little extra support. Friday has long been tied to love: in English it's named after the Norse goddess Frigg, and in French (vendredi) and Spanish (viernes) it's the day of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Check our moon calendar for this month's phases.
| Timing | Why it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | The day of Venus and Frigg | Any love, beauty or friendship spell |
| Waxing moon | The moon is growing, so it supports things you want to grow | Attracting love, new friendships, building passion |
| Full moon | The moon at its brightest and most powerful | Self-love, charging rose quartz, celebrating a relationship |
| New moon | A fresh start in the lunar cycle | Setting intentions for the kind of love you want |
| Waning moon | The moon is shrinking, so it supports letting go | Healing heartbreak, releasing an old relationship |
| Beltane (May 1) | The sabbat of fertility, passion and union | Romance, handfastings, renewing a bond |
| Venus as evening star | Venus shines brightly after sunset at certain times of year | A lovely sign to wish on during any love spell |
If you can't wait for the perfect night, don't worry. Your intention matters more than the calendar.
Love Spell Correspondences
Correspondences are ingredients and symbols traditionally linked to love. You don't need all of them. Pick two or three that you have at home. For many more, browse our free Witch's Cabinet.
- Colors: pink for gentle love, romance, friendship and self-love; red for passion and courage; green for the heart and growth; white for any purpose. See our full guide to candle color meanings.
- Herbs and flowers: rose, lavender, basil, jasmine, yarrow and apple blossom. Cunningham's herbal lists all of them for love.
- Spices and sweets: cinnamon and vanilla for warmth and attraction, honey and sugar for sweetness.
- Crystals: rose quartz above all, plus moonstone and emerald or green aventurine.
- Planet, metal and element: Venus, copper (the metal of Venus in old alchemy) and the element of water, which rules feelings.
- For friendship: lemon, sweet pea and passionflower, plus yellow candles for warmth and joy.
1. Self-Love Spell

Every love spell works better when you start here. Self-love isn't selfish: it shapes the kind of love you'll accept from others. This is a gentle spell to do on a full moon or a Friday.
You will need:
- A pink candle and a safe holder
- A small mirror
- A handful of rose petals (fresh or dried)
- A piece of rose quartz (optional)
Steps:
- Take a warm bath or shower first if you can, and scatter a few rose petals in the water. Our guide to spiritual baths has more ideas.
- Sit somewhere quiet with the mirror in front of you. Light the candle.
- Hold the rose quartz over your heart. Look into your own eyes in the mirror for a few breaths, even if it feels awkward.
- Say three true, kind things about yourself out loud. Then say: I am worthy of love, and I begin by loving me. As I give, so I receive. So mote it be.
- Sit with the candle for a while. When you're ready, snuff it out. Relight it on other nights and repeat the words.
If self-love feels hard, that's very normal. Our gentle guide to shadow work for witches can help you understand where that feeling comes from.
2. Rose Quartz Spell to Attract Love

Rose quartz is the classic love stone, gentle, warm and easy to find. Read more in the power of rose quartz crystals. This spell attracts a partner who fits who you are, without naming anyone.
You will need:
- A piece of rose quartz
- A slip of paper and a pen
- A pink or white candle
- A few rose petals or a pinch of dried lavender
Steps:
- On a waxing moon, light the candle and take a few slow breaths.
- On the paper, list the qualities you want in a partner: kind, funny, honest, loves animals. Describe how you want to feel, not what they look like, and don't write a name.
- Fold the paper toward you, place the petals or lavender inside, and set the rose quartz on top.
- Hold your hands over the stone and say: Love that is right for me, find your way to me. With harm to none and free will for all, I open my heart to love's call.
- Leave the stone and paper on a windowsill overnight to soak in the moonlight, then carry the rose quartz with you or keep it by your bed.
3. Honey Jar Spell to Sweeten an Existing Relationship

Honey jars, also called sweetening jars, come from the African American folk tradition of Hoodoo, where they're used to sweeten a person or situation. Hoodoo is a closed, living practice, and our article what is Hoodoo explains why it's best learned from its own practitioners. The version below is a general Wiccan-style jar spell for couples, and it has one firm rule: do it with your partner's knowledge and agreement, or better still, together.
You will need:
- A small jar with a lid
- Honey (or sugar if you prefer)
- Dried rose petals, a cinnamon stick and a pinch of lavender
- A slip of paper and a pen
- A small pink or red chime candle and a fireproof dish
Steps:
- Sit down together and talk about what you'd like more of: patience, laughter, time together, kinder words.
- Write those wishes on the paper, and both sign it. Fold it toward you.
- Put the paper in the jar with the rose petals, cinnamon and lavender, then pour in honey to cover it.
- Each of you takes a tiny taste of honey from a clean spoon (not from the jar) and says: As this honey is sweet, so our love is sweet to each other.
- Close the jar. Set the candle on the fireproof dish beside it and let it burn while you spend time together.
- Repeat the candle part on Fridays whenever your relationship needs a little extra sweetness.
4. Friendship Spell

Love isn't only romantic. Friendship is one of the most precious kinds of love, and this spell invites warm new friends into your life or strengthens the friendships you have.
You will need:
- A yellow or pink candle
- A lemon, cut in half
- A cup of tea you love
Steps:
- On a waxing moon, light the candle and make your tea.
- Hold the lemon and breathe in its bright scent. Think of the kind of friend you'd like to have, or of a friend you'd like to be closer to.
- Say: Bright and kind, true and dear, let good friends gather near. I offer warmth and I receive, in friendship's circle I believe.
- Sip your tea slowly by the candle. Then do something friendly in the real world: send a message, join a group, invite someone over.
5. Simple Candle Spell for Love

Candle magick is one of the easiest kinds of spellwork for beginners, and it's a great way to send out a clear, open wish for love. If you'd like to go further, our Basic Magick and Advanced Spells course covers candle magick step by step.
You will need:
- A pink candle (gentle love) or red candle (passion)
- A pin or toothpick for carving
- A few drops of olive oil
- A pinch of dried rose petals, basil or cinnamon
Steps:
- Carve a small heart into the candle, along with a word for what you're asking for, such as joy, trust or romance.
- Rub a little olive oil on the candle from the middle toward the top and from the middle toward the base, then roll it lightly in the herbs.
- Set it in a safe holder, light it and say: Flame of love, burn bright and true, bring the love that's meant to be, the love that's right for me. So mote it be.
- Watch the flame for a few minutes while you picture yourself feeling loved and happy.
- Let the candle burn down while you stay nearby, or snuff it and relight it each Friday until it's gone.
Write down your spell, date and moon phase in your Book of Shadows so you can see what worked. Our Spell Crafting and the Book of Shadows course shows you how to write your own spells, too.
After Your Love Spell
Love spells work best alongside real-life action. Go out, say yes to things, talk to new people and be honest about what you want. Give your spell at least one full moon cycle before you judge it. And remember that the answer might come in a form you didn't expect, like a new friend, a renewed spark or a deeper peace with yourself.
Love Spell Safety Notes
- Fire: never leave a candle burning unattended, and keep it away from curtains, pets and dried herbs.
- Herbs on candles: use only a light dusting, since loose herbs can flare up.
- Skin: cinnamon and many essential oils can irritate skin. Don't rub them on your body, and patch-test anything you add to a bath.
- Honey: never give honey to babies under one year old.
- Pets: lily, some essential oils and several herbs are harmful to cats and dogs, so keep spell supplies out of reach.
- Wellbeing: spells aren't a substitute for medical, mental health or relationship support when you need it.
Final Thoughts
Love magick is at its best when it's honest, gentle and free. Start with yourself, ask for the kind of love you truly want, and leave everyone else free to choose. A single pink candle and a few kind words can do more than any spell that tries to bend another heart.

Love Spells FAQs
Do love spells really work?
Love spells work best as a way to focus your intention and open yourself to love, not as a way to control anyone. Many witches find they bring confidence, clarity and new connections, especially when paired with real-life action.
Is it wrong to cast a love spell?
Love spells for yourself, for attracting the right partner or for strengthening a relationship with your partner's agreement are considered ethical by most witches. Spells that try to force a specific person to love you go against free will and the Wiccan Rede.
Can I cast a love spell on a specific person?
We don't recommend it. A spell aimed at one person tries to override their free choice, which most Wiccans see as harmful. Instead, do magick for your own confidence and clarity, then let them choose.
What is the easiest love spell for beginners?
A simple candle spell is the easiest: carve a heart into a pink candle, dress it with a little olive oil and rose petals, light it and speak your intention. The self-love mirror spell is another easy and powerful place to start.
What is the best day for a love spell?
Friday is the traditional day for love spells because it's linked with Venus and the Norse goddess Frigg. A waxing or full moon adds extra support for attracting love.
What color candle is used for love spells?
Pink is used for gentle love, romance, friendship and self-love. Red is used for passion and desire, and white can stand in for any color.
How long does a love spell take to work?
There's no fixed timeline. Many witches give a love spell at least one full moon cycle, about a month, and look for small changes such as new invitations, more confidence or warmer conversations.
Can love spells backfire?
Spells that try to control another person are the ones most known for going wrong. Ethical love spells that focus on yourself or on qualities you want in a partner are gentle and very unlikely to cause harm.
