Hey there, fellow witches and spiritual seekers! If you’re curious about exploring the world of divination, pendulum dowsing is a great place to start. In this article, we’ll walk you through the basics of using a pendulum for divination, so you can start incorporating this simple yet powerful tool into your spiritual practice.
What is a Pendulum?
A pendulum is a small weight suspended on a chain or string, often made from crystals, wood, metal, or other materials. It’s a versatile divination tool that can help you seek answers, gain insight, and make decisions by interpreting the pendulum’s movements.
Choosing Your Pendulum
First things first, you’ll need a pendulum. You can purchase one from a metaphysical shop or online, or even make your own using a simple weight and string. When selecting a pendulum, trust your intuition and choose one that resonates with you. Some popular pendulum materials include:
- Crystals: Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, or Selenite
- Wood: Oak, Ash, or Pine
- Metal: Copper, Brass, or Silver
- Glass or Resin: Various colors and designs
Remember, the material of your pendulum is a personal choice, and what matters most is your connection with the tool.

Pendulum Mat
A pendulum mat is a helpful addition to your divination practice. It’s a circular chart with different sections labeled “Yes,” “No,” and “Maybe,” along with other symbols or letters. Using a pendulum mat can provide a clear visual representation of your pendulum’s responses and help you interpret its movements more easily. You can purchase a pre-made pendulum mat or create your own using a piece of paper or cloth.
Cleansing and Charging Your Pendulum
Before using your pendulum, it’s important to cleanse and charge it. This helps to remove any residual energies and attune the pendulum to your own energy. There are several ways to do this:
- Smudging: Pass your pendulum through the smoke of sage, palo santo, or your preferred cleansing herb
- Moonlight: Place your pendulum under the light of a full moon overnight
- Visualization: Hold your pendulum and visualize white light cleansing and charging it
- Intention: Set a clear intention for your pendulum to be a tool for guidance and insight
Establishing Communication
To use your pendulum effectively, you’ll need to establish a clear line of communication. Start by holding the pendulum’s chain between your fingers, allowing the weight to dangle freely over the center of your pendulum mat. Ask your pendulum to show you a “yes” response, and observe its movement. Common responses include:
- Swinging towards the “Yes” section of the mat
- Swinging towards the “No” section of the mat
- Swinging towards the “Maybe” section or making a circular motion
Repeat this process for “no” and “maybe” responses. Keep in mind that your pendulum’s responses may differ from others, so trust what feels right to you.
Asking Questions
Now that you’ve established your pendulum’s communication style, it’s time to start asking questions. Begin with simple, clear questions that can be answered with a “yes” or “no.” Hold your pendulum over the center of the mat, ask your question, and wait for the pendulum to begin moving. Trust your intuition and interpret the response based on where the pendulum swings on the mat.
Tips for Success:
- Stay grounded and centered while using your pendulum
- Ask clear, specific questions to receive accurate answers
- Trust your intuition and don’t second-guess the pendulum’s responses
- Practice regularly to strengthen your connection with your pendulum
- Keep a pendulum journal to track your questions and insights
Conclusion
Using a pendulum for divination is a simple and accessible way to tap into your intuition and seek guidance from within. With a pendulum mat, a little practice, and an open mind, you can start incorporating this powerful tool into your spiritual practice. Remember, your pendulum is a sacred ally on your journey of self-discovery and growth.

Have used a pendulum for many years. Pretty good intro. Only suggestion – use a semi circular chart rather than a round one. I just visualize a semi circle labeled 1 to 100. Use it for time. Percentages, other things. Example health ok is around 80, minor issues around 70 and poor health 60.
I use mine to speak with my spirit guide and other dead who want to share their stories. I always open with welcoming light energy and rejecting negative energy. And i thank my spirit guide when we finish.
I agree that the mat’s letters should be semi- circle. It makes things much easier. I draw my own and make giant spaces for each letter. I can’t spell and my spirit guide is too nice to tell at me. Lol
I’m new to all this but I’ve been using my Christmas with my pendulum and my grid board which is always a lot of fun
Hi Folks. New to Pendulum Divination. I’m hearing in the comments above to use a semi-circle rather than circle board. Pardon, can someone send me a clear picture of the semi-circle and what all that entails/actually looks like? I’m more of a visual person. Would really appreciate.
Thank you in advance.
