In most fantasy films, TV shows, and books, there is a single requirement for becoming a witch — being born with magickal abilities. Those who have supernatural powers will eventually, after receiving some guidance, be able to use them to their full potential. On the other hand, those who aren’t born witches will never be able to cast even a single spell, no matter how much they try.
But do these stories have any basis in reality? Is magick available only to those who are born witches, or is there a way to learn and improve? Stick around, and you’ll find out!
Can You Be Born a Witch?
The simplest way to explain whether witchcraft is innate or can be learned is to compare it to another skill. And that’s because that’s precisely what it is — a skill much like painting, cooking, or dancing.
So, when we put it like that, it becomes much clearer. Some people are, of course, naturally better painters, dancers, or cooks. But anyone can learn these skills with some hard work and perseverance. Otherwise, there would be no need for painting, dancing, or cooking classes — those who don’t have any talent would simply have no reason to take them.
Similarly, some people are born with stronger intuition, better senses, and a propensity for witchcraft. But if they never work hard at developing their skills, they will stagnate and might struggle with even the simplest of rituals. On the other hand, those who practice regularly will definitely see the results, even if they don’t have an ounce of natural talent.
In other words, you shouldn’t worry about whether you were born a witch or not. If you want to start practicing magick, you should do it regardless. Start your research and do what feels right to you. As long as you’re committed, the results are sure to come.

Can Anyone Become a Witch?
We’ve established you don’t have to be born a witch to become one, but another question remains. Does that mean anyone can become a witch? Or are there some limitations after all?
Traditionally and in the media, witches are typically women. It’s rare to see other genders in this role, so it’s no wonder people assume there are no male, trans, or non-binary witches. That couldn’t be further from the truth, though. While it’s true that a large portion of the Wiccan community is made up of women, all genders, races, orientations, and ages are welcome.
All you really need to become a witch is to be aware of your power and to want to exert it. If you check these two boxes, you certainly qualify, no matter who you are and where you’re from. The rest is just practice and discovering what type of witchcraft is right for you!
How Do You Become a Witch?
When joining a community of witches, you might expect to have to participate in an initiation ritual, but that’s not necessarily the case. Some organized groups certainly have such ceremonies, but there are those that don’t as well. And if you don’t want to be a part of a group, you don’t have to at all. You can delve into the world of magick on your own and find out where it takes you.
Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong way to practice witchcraft. Whether you use crystals, tarot cards, or herbs for your magick, you are a witch as long as you identify as such. Some witches like to keep their magick a secret, while others are quite open about it and gladly share it with the world. It’s up to you to decide how you want to approach it since witchcraft is something you’re doing for yourself.

Hard Work Always Beats Natural Talent
Natural talent for witchcraft is real, and people who have it can master spells quicker and become powerful witches. But can doesn’t mean they always do. Those who don’t try to work on their abilities won’t master the craft no matter how talented they are. In that, witchcraft is no different than any other skill. And if you’re born with no natural talent, don’t be discouraged — that doesn’t mean you can’t be a witch. Anyone can become a witch as long as they have the right mindset, dedication, and interest. It might take more time to learn and understand the craft, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it. So go ahead and start practicing your magick today. And remember — witches are definitely not born. They are made with hard work!
