History and folklore
Gebo means gift. In early Germanic society gifts created bonds, and a gift called for a gift in return, a theme also found in the Old Norse poem Havamal. The Old English rune poem says giving brings honor and support, and offers help to those with nothing else. Gebo has no place in the later Norse rune poems, so modern readings rest on that one poem plus interpretation. Today it stands for partnership, generosity and balanced exchange.
