History and folklore
Dioptase was found in the late 1700s in the copper mines of Kazakhstan, and the first pieces were mistaken for emerald. Its name comes from Greek words meaning to see through, after the cleavage planes you can see inside the crystal. Fine clusters later came from Tsumeb in Namibia. Crystal workers treat its strong green as a heart stone for forgiveness, compassion and emotional renewal.
