History and folklore
Emerald was a favorite of the ancient Egyptians, and Cleopatra is often remembered for her love of the stone. Traditionally it was dedicated to Venus, and folklore held that an emerald could reveal whether a lover's promises were true. It has long been tied to spring, growth and faithful love, and it is the birthstone of May. Raw or rough emerald is affordable and works beautifully in spells, so there is no need to buy a polished gem.
