History and folklore

Petrified wood forms when fallen trees are buried and slowly replaced by minerals, keeping the rings and grain of the original wood. The Petrified Forest in Arizona holds trees more than 200 million years old. In folklore it was carried for long life and protection, and it was sometimes kept as a charm against accidents. For witches it is a natural link between tree magick and stone, and a fitting gift to the ancestors at Samhain.
